Last Grasp for String

These lines are transparent
in an ideal world
that word would let you see through them
but I’m afraid that our parting
makes it less ideal
than I’d care to admit

Metaphors can’t carry more meaning
helium returns to its source
the child cries
the adult speculates
on the impermanence of emotion
and the fleeting beauty of it all

It doesn’t work
if the balloon isn’t red
or if we question
how a thing can return to where it was
when it’s going the wrong way
mistaking the sky for the ground
